FableAI vs AI Dungeon: An Honest Comparison
FableAI vs AI Dungeon, written by the team behind FableAI. What AI Dungeon does better, where FableAI differs, and how to pick between them.
Disclosure first: we make FableAI, and this is our blog. To keep the comparison useful anyway, every claim about AI Dungeon below is linked to a source, and where AI Dungeon is ahead, the post says so.
If you already play AI Dungeon and are curious about an AI Dungeon alternative, or you are new to the genre and weighing the two apps, here is how they actually differ.
What AI Dungeon is
AI Dungeon started as a hackathon project by Nick Walton in 2019, was released publicly that year, and is developed by the studio Latitude (Wikipedia). It created the AI-narrated text adventure as a category; every app in this space, ours included, came after.
Those years of head start show up as depth. AI Dungeon lets you play curated and community-made scenarios, build your own adventures, and publish them for others (Wikipedia). It has a multiplayer mode where each player controls their own character and takes turns with the AI, online or on a shared device (AI Dungeon help center). It generates images inside the story through its “See” mode (Wikipedia). Its memory system, built on Story Cards and Memory Banks, is designed to keep long stories coherent by surfacing the right details when they are needed.
One headline feature is model choice. AI Dungeon lets players pick between AI models, from lighter options on the free tier up to its most powerful models on paid plans, with context windows that grow as you pay more (AI Dungeon help center). Both apps offer model choice; how they price it is the clearest difference between them, covered below.
How AI Dungeon’s plans work
AI Dungeon is freemium: a free tier with a modest amount of memory and context, and a ladder of paid memberships that add more capable models, more context, larger memory, and a pool of credits used for things like image generation and extra context on demand (AI Dungeon help center). Paid tiers run from roughly fifteen dollars a month at the entry level to a top tier near a hundred, month to month or discounted for longer terms. Prices and limits change; check their pricing page for current numbers.
The short version: you pay for a bigger engine and a longer memory, metered partly by credits.
Where FableAI is different
FableAI is our take on the same core idea, an AI story RPG where you describe what your character does and the narrator writes what happens next. The differences are in how model choice is priced, the economy, and the creation flow.
Narrators priced per use, not per tier
FableAI has model choice too — we call them narrators. Orion, Azure, Celestial, Vega, and the rest each have a distinct style and a per-use gem cost, from 1 gem per turn for the budget narrator up to 200 for the most powerful experimental one. The difference is the gate. AI Dungeon unlocks its stronger models on higher membership tiers; in FableAI every narrator is available on every plan, including free, and you can switch narrators mid-story from the settings. A pricier narrator simply spends your gems faster. You pay for what you use, not for permission to use it.
Images in the story
Both apps illustrate scenes. In FableAI, each story has its own image settings: how often the narrator generates an image, from off to often, and an art style — cinematic, anime, photorealistic, fantasy, watercolor, or pixel art. The free plan has a daily image limit; upper tiers are unlimited.
Soundtrack and voice
FableAI stories can also have sound. Each story has a music setting that generates an AI background soundtrack: you describe the style you want — “epic orchestral fantasy” — choose instrumental or with vocals, and it plays under the story. There is also voice narration, currently in beta: an AI voice reads the story aloud, with a choice of voices and reading speeds. Narration minutes are metered monthly and included with paid plans. We did not find comparable audio features listed among AI Dungeon’s membership benefits (AI Dungeon help center).
Gems that carry over
FableAI runs on gems, the currency spent to generate story content. The free plan has a daily allowance, and paid plans add more gems per day up to a maximum you can accumulate. Unused gems carry over from day to day up to your plan’s cap rather than resetting each month, so a week off does not cost you your balance. Both apps meter usage — the difference is what happens to the part you did not use.
The creation flow
In FableAI you create your own AI adventure by filling in narrator instructions, an opening scene, and player details, then submitting it for review. Specifics:
- Player variables. Fields like
{.name}pull in each player’s own answers, so the same story reads differently for everyone who plays it. - Story cards and chapters. Background notes keep the narrator consistent, and chapters let a story branch into new sections. Chapters are a premium feature, and turning them on makes an adventure single-player, since branching and multiplayer do not mix cleanly.
- A deposit, not a fee. Publishing places a gem deposit that is held during review and returned in full when your adventure is approved. The deposit only costs you something if you abandon a rejected draft.
- Private publishing. You can also publish an adventure privately for a small flat fee: it skips the public review queue, is playable only by people you share the link with, and can be promoted to the public catalog later.
Adventures are in English for now, with more languages planned. Mature content is handled by an NSFW toggle rather than a blanket ban.
Side by side
Every cell here is checked against the sources linked in this post or against FableAI’s own app.
| FableAI | AI Dungeon | |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | iOS, Android, web | Web, iOS, Android (plus desktop) |
| Play community-made adventures | Yes | Yes |
| Build and publish your own | Yes, with review | Yes |
| Multiplayer | Yes | Yes |
| Pick your AI model | Yes, every narrator on every plan, priced per use | Yes, varies by tier |
| Images inside the story | Yes, with frequency and art-style settings | Yes, via “See” mode |
| Soundtrack and voice narration | Yes (narration in beta, paid plans) | Not listed among membership benefits |
| Free tier | Yes | Yes |
The table reads close to even, which is why the differences that matter are behind the checkmarks. AI Dungeon’s years of head start still show: its memory system built on Story Cards and Memory Banks, a desktop app, and a community library growing since 2019 are real strengths (Wikipedia, AI Dungeon help center).
Which one to pick
AI Dungeon if you want the largest established community and authoring toolset, context windows that scale with your membership, or its Memory Bank approach to very long stories.
FableAI if you want every narrator available from the free plan up and priced per use, gems that carry over rather than resetting each month, a generated soundtrack and voice narration under your story, or the deposit-refund publishing flow described above.
Both have free tiers, so trying each with the same opening scene is the cheapest way to decide — the narrator’s writing is the product, and that you can only judge by playing. Ours starts at the scenarios catalog.
