Starting your first AI-driven adventure can feel a little like standing at the edge of a diving board — exciting, but you are not quite sure how to jump. The good news is that there is no wrong way to play. Still, a few small habits will make your early sessions dramatically more fun. Here are five that seasoned players swear by.
1. Write actions, not commands
The single biggest upgrade to your storytelling is how you phrase what you do. Compare these two inputs:
- “Open the door.”
- “I ease the door open with one hand, keeping the other on the hilt of my dagger, listening for footsteps.”
Both work — but the second gives the narrator far more to react to. Describe intention, posture, and mood, and the story reflects it back to you. You are co-writing, so bring detail.
Play the character, not the controller. The more you inhabit your protagonist, the more the world comes alive around them.
2. Lean into the setting
Every scenario has a texture — a genre, a tone, a set of unwritten rules. A noir mystery wants tension and cigarette smoke; a high-fantasy quest wants grandeur and stakes.
Match your energy to the world
If you drop modern slang into a medieval court, the story can accommodate it, but you may break the spell you came for. Instead, ask yourself what your character would notice in this world, and describe that. Immersion is a two-way street.
Use the environment
The details the narrator mentions are not decoration — they are hooks. A flickering lantern, a nervous guard, a locked chest. Interact with them and the plot deepens.
3. Do not be afraid to steer
You are the director as much as the lead actor. If a scene is dragging or a thread bores you, take initiative:
- Change location — “I leave the tavern and head for the docks.”
- Introduce a goal — “I decide I need to find the missing heir before nightfall.”
- Raise the stakes yourself — pick a fight, make a promise, betray an ally.
The AI will happily follow your lead. A story only stalls when everyone is waiting for someone else to act — so act.
4. Embrace the unexpected
Sometimes the narration surprises you: a character you trusted turns out to be lying, or a plan goes sideways. Resist the urge to “undo” every twist. The messy, unplanned moments are often where the best stories live. Roll with a setback and see what your character does under pressure — that is where personality emerges.
That said, if something genuinely breaks the fiction or heads somewhere you did not want, you are always in control. It is your story, and you can redirect at any time.
5. Save your favorites and keep exploring
Once you find a scenario you love, you will want more like it. Two habits help:
- Note what worked. Was it the genre, the pacing, a particular character dynamic? Chase that feeling in your next pick.
